“I often look for ways to capture the beauty of the strange.” – Frankie Wolf
Wolf’s major work regularly explores her fascination with global mythology and guising which includes influences from folk art, petroglyphs, and wild man/woman representations. She finds interest in the gritty imperfections of life, the gaps that are often overlooked and subjects that are not normally highlighted in the mainstream. Her work has been described as being “rich with layers” in relation to her techniques along with her themes and ideas.
She has several ongoing series including Tokens, Shadowbox Anomalous (which is an overall umbrella series featuring several sub-series), and Images & Reflections. She has recently begun a new series called Alien Landscapes which is intended to be part of a future group showcase with the artists’ collective, Iblebe. That showcase is being created under the overall title: ExoUniverse.
Wolf was the featured artist at The Cellar in 1994 with her solo show Palooza People, which included a permanent mural and installation. Her next solo show First Folk was held at the Koger Center for the Arts Donor Room in 1996. Between 1985 and 1998 she was invited to create numerous illustrations for local businesses in the Midlands and publications including a comic zine. She also created various pieces for Columbia’s famed Rockafellas.
More recently she exhibited her Tokens series at Cool Beans in 2016 and was the featured artist for USC’s Southern Exposure in 2018 with Duo Cortona. In 2019, she had work on display at Columbia College’s Goodall Gallery for a Trenholm Artists Guild showcase. Over the years, Wolf has been chosen for awards and comments by such known art luminaries as Dorothy Netherland, Ed Rice, Wim Roefs, Claire Farrell, Mark Anderson, Jane Nodine and Karen Oremus.
Wolf has been invited to submit work to the National Art Center, Tokyo by the French-Japanese institution, Salon Blanc, four times: in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In 2021, she exhibited work at Gallery Akatsuki which is located in the famous Ginza district of Chūō, Tokyo.
She is a former board member of the Trenholm Artists Guild and a founding member of Iblebe, a new artists’ collective. As a part of Iblebe she helped to organize an Artists’ Day at the 2022 Irmo Cherry Blossom Festival.
